The Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot Metropolitan Area and CityBike Global SA from Barcelona have concluded an agreement on the implementation of the new Mevo. Public bike system consisting of 4.1 thousand bikes two-wheelers will be available in 16 communes of the metropolis in its entirety from June 2023 at the latest. Gdańsk will account for 54 percent. of the entire fleet, i.e. exactly 2,226 bicycles. See videos and photo gallery from the event.
The agreement was concluded on February 8, 2022 at the European Solidarity Center in Gdańsk. OMGGS, acting on behalf of the 16 municipalities where the Mevo bike sharing system will be implemented, selected a new operator during a year and a half competitive dialogue . CityBike Global from Spain submitted the best offer for PLN 159 million. Its subcontractor in the implementation of the six-year contract for operating Mevo is GeoVelo from Szczecin.
CityBike Global plans to use 1,000 bikes from the first Mevo system and 3,099 new two-wheelers – all with electric drive. The new vehicles will be manufactured by Vaimoo from Italy.
– I am glad that we can finally be participants in this event, which is today’s signing of the contract with the new operator – said Michał Glaser, president of the Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot Metropolitan Area : – Mevo was a great joy for us, and later we experienced the end of its service in great sadness first stage. Behind us are two years of hard struggle with the procedures of the Polish public procurement law. Today we are signing a contract with a Spanish-Polish-Italian consortium. Exactly the same bikes will soon be introduced in Stockholm for the first time, and Vaimoo’s two-wheelers are already being used in several other major European cities. This promises good cooperation and that the inhabitants of the metropolis will be able to enjoy these bikes in 2023, we strongly believe it.

The contractor will have until June 2023 to fully launch the system in 16 communes . The 14 local governments that originally participated in the project (Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot, Żukowo, Reda, Pruszcz Gdański, Tczew, Sierakowice, Rumia, Somonino, Stężyca, Kartuzy, Puck and Władysławowo) were also joined by Kolbudy and Kosakowo. Hence the increase in the number of stations where bicycles are collected and returned – from 660 to 717.
Most importantly – unlike the first version of Mevo, this time OMGGS orders a service, not the purchase of bikes and stations. This means that the operator will receive payment for the service in equal installments for each month of proper operation of the system. Also unlike Mevo 1.0, revenues from advertising and subscriptions will go to OMGGS, which will also be a co-administrator of users’ personal data and will be responsible for the money they pay for subscriptions.
